Multi-Tier Channel Pricing: A Practical Guide for Distributors

What is multi-tier channel pricing?

Multi-tier channel pricing is the structure a brand uses when its products pass through more than one reseller before reaching the end customer. A typical chain runs from the brand to a distributor, from the distributor to a dealer or installer, and from the dealer to the customer. Each level buys at one price and sells at another, and each needs to see only the price that applies to them.

How prices are calculated at each tier

Most programs start from the brand's cost and MSRP. The distributor price is cost plus a distributor margin; the dealer price is the distributor price plus a dealer margin; the end customer pays a price at or below MSRP. When margins are set as percentages per tier, a single cost change should ripple through every level automatically. In practice, many channels still rebuild this math in spreadsheets and email PDFs, which is why dealers so often quote from a sheet that is several versions old.

Common problems in tiered channels

The three issues we see most are stale pricing, invisible sub-dealers, and manual reconciliation of recurring revenue. Stale pricing leads to margin leakage and disputed invoices. Sub-dealers recruited by distributors are often unknown to the brand, so there is no visibility into who is selling what. Subscription products, such as connectivity plans or monitoring services, are frequently reconciled by hand each month.

How a dealer portal solves it

A white-label dealer portal gives every account a login with tier-specific pricing, quoting, ordering, and billing. Tiered calculates each tier's price from your cost and margins, lets distributors onboard their own dealers, and runs recurring billing and payouts automatically, all under your brand for a flat platform fee.
